Awakening Our Spirit

We have written a short history of the Denesuline in the Cold Lake area from oral and some written work.

We have attempted to show that the impacts of the fur trade, the Indian Act, the Frog Lake Massacre, the epidemics, the Primrose Lake Bombing Range, the availability of alcohol to natives (1960’s) and the Residential School era had in no way broken the spirits of the Denesuline.

Despite all these impacts the Denesuline bounced back each time and strived towards a strong community.

The visions of the leaders and community members is shown by the many buildings such as the school, the Health Center, the Healing Center, the Daycare, the Fire Hall, the places of worship, and the state of the art Band Office. Also the Primco Dene Catering and other member owned businesses are thriving through the determination of the Denesuline.

At least 98% of households live sober and productive lives. No matter how many times we were impacted we have and still are able to bounce back and defy the odds against us imposed by man and nature. We can be very proud of ourselves and our accomplishments throughout these years and know that our Spirits and that God willing will continue to improve our community for everyone.

The need to include our culture in our schools, buildings, places of worship is apparent, therefore the need to include our cultural beliefs and language will only make us stronger.
